Reflections Thema 1

This week I have learned how to use the resources of Web of knowledge. I have read the article "Border communication: media sociology and STS" by Judy Wajcman and Poul K.Jones. I have also read the book by Bertrand Russell "The Problems of Philosophy". It was interesting for me to learn about the possibility of finding the necessary articles in scientific journals with citations. It was also useful to get acquainted with the resources of KTH Library and the Web of Science database.
During the lecture we studied the question "What is knowledge?". This is a complex issue studied by many philosophers such as Immanuel Kant, Rene Descartes, Plato, Hume etc. Lectures on this issue comprehensively studied from the point of view of different philosophies, sects and trends. I particularly remember a question "How do I know that it is my hand?" which among other things has been studied by Rene Descartes. The answer to this philosophical question is not as simple as it might seem at once and requires multilateral philosophical studies. The objects for B. Russell’s research are sense-data, knowledge by acquaintance, knowledge by description, definite description. Russell's philosophy falls into analytic philosophy of early 20th-century.
At the seminar I and my colleagues were discussing the book "The Problems of Philosophy", and also philosophical issues and researches that are reflected in it. Central place in the discussions takes the research of the question "knows of knowledge". As a result of the discussion we came to the conclusion that we see the world in interaction of time and space. We see the world through the prism of our knowledge.
As a result of study of philosophical trends and knowledge on the week 44 we can notice that they can be applied to other subjects that are in the media technology curriculum. That is, first of all, use of the logical investigations in the processing of information and facts. Besides that, philosophy opens our mind and helps to improve the analytical abilities. Ways to get information help to reduce the time for the search process and contribute to the improvement of the quality of materials that are used in research process.

Maksym do you agree with Russell that there is knowledge that we can know, or do you disagree i.e. there is no knowledge that we can know because of our own limitations, and senses?

I could also widen this question to embrace truth. But I think I'll skip that for now!

  2. Hello Bobby,

Knowledges we are agree about without any doubts are those we know through our sense-data and with the help of logical processes. Our mind is a psychological filter that we use to pass through new information. There are too many knowledges in the universe to be aware of all of them. In my opinion, the logic is more important equipment for estimation of new facts.

We can discuss this in details at school.

    Best regards,
    Maksym
